A brief history of the Arabic Alphabet

Arabic is the language in which the glorious Holy Qur'an was written. There are 28 letters in the Arabic alphabet 25 which are consonants and 3 vowels. Arabic has been around for thousands of years and is still spoken today. But as with all of Allah’s creations Arabic had to go through a few changes before it became the language we have now come to know.

A brief history of Arabic…

The Arabic alphabet evolved from either the Nabataean or Syriac. The first known traces of the Nabataean alphabet were written in the Aramaic language which was at the time the main language of trade and communication. The writing and alphabet over a period of time began to evolve and later became the Arabic we now know today.

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) was chosen by Allah (SWT) to reveal the Holy Qur'an to the people of his time. This was done over a period of 23 years and the Holy Qur'an was revealed to Muhammad (Peace be Upon Him) by the angel Gabriel, while Muhammad (Peace Be upon Him) was in Ibadah to Allah (SWT) in the caves of Hira. When the angel Gabriel first approached the prophet, he told Muhammad (Peace Be upon Him) to read. The prophet could not read or write and didn’t understand what to do, but the angel Gabriel just told the prophet to read and by the miracle and grace of Allah the prophet began to read.

During the time of the prophet there was not much paper, so the Sahaba wrote down the verses of the Holy Qur'an that were revealed to Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) on whatever they could find, such as bone, stone, large leaves etc. In most cases they memorised the verses.
